Compound Relative Pronouns: El que, La que, Los cuales
Hello there! 👋 Today, we're diving into the fascinating world of compound relative pronouns in Spanish. At C1 level, mastering these is crucial for constructing more precise and elegant sentences. While they might seem a bit complex at first glance, you'll soon see that their logic is straightforward and incredibly useful!
Compound relative pronouns, such as el que, la que, los que, las que, and el cual, la cual, los cuales, las cuales, are used to introduce subordinate clauses that refer back to a previously mentioned noun or idea (the antecedent). They always agree in gender and number with this antecedent.
Pronouns with 'que': El que, la que, los que, las que, lo que
These forms are very common, especially after short, simple prepositions (e.g., a, de, en, con, por, para, sin). They can refer to both people and things. Remember to match the gender and number with the noun they refer to.
| Gender/Number | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine Singular | el que | el chico al que vi |
| Feminine Singular | la que | la casa en la que vive |
| Masculine Plural | los que | los amigos con los que salgo |
| Feminine Plural | las que | las chicas de las que hablé |
| Neuter | lo que | lo que me dijiste |
La película de la que me hablaste es excelente.
The film about which you told me is excellent.
No entiendo lo que quieres decir.
I don't understand what you mean.
Pronouns with 'cual': El cual, la cual, los cuales, las cuales, lo cual
Forms with cual are more formal and often used in written texts or official speech. They're particularly useful after complex prepositions (e.g., a pesar de, en contra de, gracias a, a través de) or when you want to avoid ambiguity if the antecedent isn't immediately clear. Lo cual refers to an entire preceding clause or idea.
| Gender/Number | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine Singular | el cual | el informe del cual hablé |
| Feminine Singular | la cual | la ley en la cual se basa |
| Masculine Plural | los cuales | los puntos sobre los cuales |
| Feminine Plural | las cuales | las razones por las cuales |
| Neuter | lo cual | llegó tarde, lo cual molestó |

He didn't come to the meeting, which surprised us all.
