Object Pronouns: Where do they go? 🤔
Hello! 👋 Today we're diving into Spanish object pronouns, which are short words that replace nouns (like 'book' or 'people') to make sentences shorter and flow more smoothly. Think of them like 'him', 'her', 'it', or 'them' in English. Usually, we place them BEFORE the conjugated verb. For example: Juan me ve. (Juan sees me).
| Subject Pronoun | Direct Object (DOP) | Indirect Object (IOP) |
|---|---|---|
| Yo | me | me |
| Tú | te | te |
| Él/Ella/Usted | lo / la | le |
| Nosotros/as | nos | nos |
| Vosotros/as | os | os |
| Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes | los / las | les |
Two Pronouns? And the magic 'se' ✨
What happens when a sentence has two pronouns? One indirect object pronoun (IOP) and one direct object pronoun (DOP)? Remember the order: first the indirect object pronoun (IOP), then the direct object pronoun (DOP).
There's also a very important rule: if the pronoun le or les (IOP) comes before lo, la, los, or las (DOP), then le/les changes to se. It's a little magic change to make it sound better!
Se lo explico bien.
I explain it well to him/her.
When there's more than one verb or it's a command! 🗣️
- In normal and negative sentences: Pronouns always go BEFORE the conjugated verb. (E.g., No lo compres. – Don't buy it.)
- In constructions with an infinitive or gerund (e.g., querer ver, estar haciendo): You have two options!
- 1. BEFORE the conjugated verb. (E.g., Lo quiero ver. – I want to see it.)
- 2. ATTACHED to the infinitive or gerund. Remember the accent mark! (E.g., Quiero verlo. – I want to see it.)
- In affirmative commands (when you tell someone to do something): Pronouns are ALWAYS ATTACHED to the verb. Also remember the accent mark!
Both forms are correct! Choose whichever you prefer.
