Present Tense: Irregular Verbs 'ir' and 'venir'
Hello there! Today, we're diving into two super important and frequently used irregular verbs in Spanish: ir (to go) and venir (to come). For A1 level, these are essential! Their conjugations are irregular, meaning they don't follow the usual patterns. But don't worry, you'll get the hang of it! 💪
Let's start with the verb ir – 'to go'. It's quite irregular, and its forms in the Presente de Indicativo (Present Simple) look like this:
| Pronoun | ir (to go) |
|---|---|
| yo | voy |
| tú | vas |
| él/ella/usted | va |
| nosotros/as | vamos |
| vosotros/as | vais |
| ellos/ellas/ustedes | van |
Yo voy a casa ahora.
I go home now.
Now let's move on to venir – 'to come'. This verb also has an irregular conjugation, especially in the first person singular ('yo') and in the stem for the other persons:
| Pronoun | venir (to come) |
|---|---|
| yo | vengo |
| tú | vienes |
| él/ella/usted | viene |
| nosotros/as | venimos |
| vosotros/as | venís |
| ellos/ellas/ustedes | vienen |
¿Vienes a mi fiesta?
Are you coming to my party?
We use ir (to go) when moving away from the speaker. We use venir (to come) when moving towards the speaker.
- ir: We use it when we move away from where we are, to another place.
- venir: We use it when we move towards the speaker's location, or to a place discussed from the speaker's perspective.
That's all for today! I know irregular verbs can seem tricky at first, but the more you use them, the more natural they'll become. Good luck with the exercises! 😊
